Report Ageing Workforce Report: Employer readiness to support the needs of Australia’s ageing workforce

Description: This Australian report is part of a larger study “Working longer, staying healthy and keeping productive” undertaken by the Australian National University. This part found that employers that take the time to support aging worker’s needs are finding increasingly positive results which include increased participation, decreased absenteeism and turnover in aging workers. The study notes that research does suggest that older workers who are in good health are expected to be less inclined to exit the workforce. Nevertheless, it is important to consider the extent to which the concerns about work and health in older workers is legitimate, and what needs to be done, regarding physical and psychological wellbeing, and cognitive performance that may or may not affect safety and health on the job. The report also gives recommendations to employers which include, but are not limited to, tailoring health and safety practices; addressing discrimination and removing disincentives.

It focuses on how organizations can ensure their aging workers remain motivated, productive and healthy. In addition, this book discusses the role older workers themselves play in continuing work at higher age. To do this, the authors integrate research from different areas, such as literature on leadership, psychological contracts and diversity with literature on the aging workforce. Through this integration this book provides innovative ways for organizations and workers to maintain productivity, motivation and health. Report BMC: Inequalities in employment rates among older men and women in Canada, Denmark, Sweden and the UK

He goes on to discuss the need for changes to be made in workplaces. He asserts this will not be an option as the labour force decreases and there is a growing need to keep older workers employed. A key discussion emphasizes the concept of individual work ability - a process of human resources in relation to work. Human resources can be described by (1) health and functional capacities (physical, mental, social), (2) education and competence, (3) values and attitudes, and (4) motivation. When this comprehensive set of individual factors is related to (5) work demands (physical, mental), (6) work community and management, and (7) work environment, the outcome can be called the individual work ability. The work ability concept is a dynamic process that changes greatly for several reasons throughout an individual's work life. One of the main factors inducing change is aging and its effects on human resources. The author asserts the promotion of work ability creates the base for the processes of employability. Together they can be powerful tools for improving employment at all ages, especially for aging workers.

Report Engaging the mature worker: An action plan for Alberta

The plan promotes active aging and sets out policies which aid in supporting aging workers. In 2006, the Government of Alberta acknowledged the need to increase the labour force participation of mature workers in its comprehensive labour force strategy, Building and Educating Tomorrow’s Workforce (BETW). Between October 2007 and February 2008 an online public consultation on Alberta’s aging workforce gathered input from Albertans on their priorities, issues and experience with an aging workforce. Article Harvard Business Review: The Case for Hiring Older Worker

Description: The authors suggest that to continue to grow our economy, companies need to take action by bringing older people back to work and giving them meaningful, important jobs. They note that this may seem simple, but age bias is a serious hurdle. Many companies prioritize hiring cheaper, younger workers who they believe are more valuable than someone more expensive with more expertise. Contrary to popular belief, however, older, more tenured people are more successful entrepreneurs. Those over the age of 40 are three times more likely to create successful companies as a result of their patient, collaborative natures, and their lack of have a “need to prove myself” attitude. The article includes a list of actions companies can take.

Article Health, Work, and Safety of Farmers Ages 50 and Older

Info:

Description: Over half of America's 1.9 million farms are operated by persons over age 55. The situation is similar in Manitoba. Farming is one of the most dangerous occupations in the nation; the oldest age group in farming suffers disproportionately high mortality and morbidity rates. Results from this study indicate that farmers may have unique perspectives of health and the role that work plays in their health outcomes. Despite the perceived positive attributes of farm work, the nature of the work performed by this sample of 725 farmers indicates the continued performance of tasks that place them at high risk for injury. The study concludes that because of the contextual nature of farm life, work modification counseling may be more beneficial for the aging farmer than abstinence from work. Examples are provided. Description: This abstract describes an article found in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine.51:269–280, 2008 but will require a subscription to review the entire article which is summarized below. Of value would be the extensive references that appear to be useful in managing an aging workforce. The literature on aging and work was reviewed, including demographic trends, physical and cognitive changes, safety and performance, work ability, and retirement patterns. The study came to several conclusions that would guide further research, policy changes and employer actions. Older workers have more serious, but less frequent, workplace injuries and illnesses than younger ones. There is evidence that many of these problems can be prevented and their consequences reduced by anticipating the physical and cognitive changes of age. Many employers are aware that such efforts are necessary, but most have not yet addressed them. There is a need for implementation and evaluative research of programs and policies with four dimensions: the work environment, work arrangements and work-life balance, health promotion and disease prevention, and social support. Employers who establish age-friendly workplaces that promote and support the work ability of employees as they age may gain in safety, productivity, competitiveness, and sustainable business practices.

Article National Library of Medicine: Relating Older Workers’ Injuries to the Mismatch between Physical Ability and Job Demands

Description: This research studied the association between job demand and occupational injury among older workers. The authors found that higher job demand was associated with increased injury risk. Within high job demands, lower physical ability was associated with increased injury risk. Description: The overall goal of this research was to understand trends in the incidence and patterns of work injuries among older workers, and the consequences of these injuries relative to younger workers in B.C. The report describes injury trends among aging workers in BC and Canada and compares the costs of these injuries to those who are younger and get injured at work. The researchers found that there was no increase in risk of injury with greater aging worker participation. Rather, it found that chronic conditions, such as osteoarthritis and diabetes, are contributing factors to increased workplace injury.
